Playseat Challenge X: Lock-Mod X
After releasing the Playseat Challenge: Lock-Mod, there was obvious demand for a version compatible with the Playseat Challenge X (or Playseat Challenge Logitech edition). At the outset it looked like the original kit would only need few small alterations to work, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. The Playseat Challenge X had just enough small differences to make every part of the original Lock-Mod completely incompatible. After a lengthy redesign, the new Lock-Mod X kit is easier to install, more versatile, and just as rigid as the original Lock-Mod.
Primary Features
All core features of the original Lock-Mod design have been carried over to the Lock-Mod X, with several improvements to the overall design.
- Toolless folding and unfolding in under 2 minutes.
- Wheelbase structure reinforced at multiple points, and is able to easily handle high output DD wheelbases.
- Pedal tray is height adjustable and reinforced in multiple areas to eliminate pedal lift/flex, even with high load force pedals.
- Optional Side Mount assembly able to accommodate a wide range of gear (shifters, handbrakes, etc), while also being extremely rigid.
- Sturdy wheel attachments allows for easy, even with relatively heavy gear.
- Telescoping struts allows for a wide range of adjustability while maintaining a discrete profile, in comparison to the original Lock-Mod.
- Included torque wrench tool in kit (with M3 & M4 hex keys), and integrated torque limiting thumbscrews in key areas, helps ensure correct assembly and longevity of kit.
- Improved folding with added attachment points for the pedals, side struts, and the optional side mount.
Configuring the Lock-Mod X
Compared to the original Lock-Mod kit, the options for configuring the Lock-Mod X are quite straight forward. It’s recommended that you set up the base Playseat Challenge X with your chosen peripherals before confirming your Lock-Mod X order.
Wheelbase
- Wheelbase Plate Orientation: The wheelbase plate of the Playseat Challenge X can be mounted in a few different positions to match different gear and seating positions. The Lock-Mod X accounts for this with wheelbase configurations that connect either in front of (close) or behind the wheelbase hinge lock (far). If unsure of which setup you’ll use, both part options can be included in the order.
- Wheelbase Strut Length: This option allows you to add telescoping wheelbase struts if additional length is required. Whether this is needed will depend on the wheelbase plate orientation, angle of the plate, and general seating position of the rig. A general rule of thumb is to choose the Telescoping Extender with the close plate configuration, and to choose the Standard Length in the far plate configuration. If you are unsure, maximise your mounting flexibility by choosing the Telescopic Extender.
- (Optional Extra) Keyboard Mount: The same keyboard mounting system as the original Lock-Mod.
- (Optional Extra) VRS Wheelbase Mount VRS Direct Force Pro Mount
Pedals
- Pedal Feet Height: This will determine how high your pedals are positioned off the ground. To retain the stock pedal height of the Playseat Challenge X, choose the Low Fixed Height option. For up to 150mm of pedal height, choose the Adjustable Height option. For up to 300mm of pedal height, choose the Telescopic Extending Height option. For maximum flexibility in height, choose the Telescopic Extending Height option.
- (Optional Extra) Pedal Mount: Adapts the Playseat Challenge X pedal tray to use 2020 aluminium, allowing more pedal types to be mounted in a more versatile way. A heel rest with adjustable height/angle can also be selected if your chosen pedals don’t include one.
- (Optional Extra) Additional Mounting Hardware: A variety of mounting hardware to match most pedal setups.
Side Mount
- (Optional Extra) Side Mount: An aluminium based structure for mounting shifters, handbrakes and other peripherals. Similar in functionality as the original Lock-Mod, but less fiddly to set up and the with the ability to separate from the main rig for storage, if required. A set of 2 side mounts can be chosen for a sim-racing/flight-sim combo rig.
- (Optional Extra) Additional Mounting Hardware: A variety of mounting hardware for a range of peripherals.
Gear Compatibility
As with the original Lock-Mod kit, weight and force strength is much less of a limiting factor with gear choice than with the vanilla Playseat Challenge X. There are, however, a few things to note about each peripheral type.
Wheelbases
The wheelbase selection is largely limited by the bolt pattern of the Playseat Challenge X wheelbase plate. If your chosen wheelbase is compatible or can be adapted to fit (such as the optional VRS DFP mount), then the other consideration is the overall size of the unit. A long wheelbase (such as the Simucube Ultimate or Simagic Alpha U) in combination with a large rim can interfere with folding, but this can be mitigated with a QR wheel which can be externally stored. Beyond that, there is a 20nm limit on the force feedback to ensure the longevity of the kit.
Pedals
Bulky pedals & heel rests can be a tight fit when folding the rig. Pedals with a low & short profile are preferred if tight packaging is required. Adjusting how tightly the Playseat Challenge X’s frame is folded can be adjusted to allow larger pedal sets to fit more easily. The braking force limit for the pedals is 80kg, measured at the pedal face.
Side Mount Peripherals
To allow folding of the Side Mount/s underneath the Playseat Challenge X, choose relatively compact peripherals Choosing bulky side mount gear can interfere with folding the pedals, especially if they are also on the larger side. If larger gear is used, the Side Mount/s have a QR function built in that allows them to be separated entirely from the rig. This may be a more convenient option if additional storage space is available.
Keyboard Mount
The keyboard mount includes a lot of flexibility in how it’s mounted and positioned. As long as the chosen peripheral has a flat surface which the double sided release tape adheres to it should work. Note this mounting system is limited to keyboards, button boxes, and other peripherals that don’t require high force to activate (joysticks, shifters, etc). The mounting system interfaces with the wheelbase reinforcement tubing, but additional mounting anchors can be purchased for greater positioning flexibility.
Additional Accessories
Attaching additional accessories to the Playseat Challenge X should be done while keeping in mind how the rig will fold. In general, care needs to be taken in the busier areas, such as the wheelbase and pedal tray. Areas like the rear seat legs are generally a good spot to attach things, if needed.

Additional Notes
- Orders outside of Australia do not include tax at checkout, but you may be required to pay customs, duties, tariffs, taxes and VAT to receive your package. Please be sure to check with your local tax and customs office for more details.
- The warranty for this kit is set at 2 years from the date of purchase. This is contingent on the kit being assembled according to the manual, and all instructions need to be followed to ensure kit longevity. Failure to do so may result in the warranty being voided.
- Unfortunately this is a limited run item, at least for now. Once it’s gone, it’ll be gone for a while. That said, once the initial run has been sent out I will be working on a digital release of the Lock-Mod X (as well as the original Lock-Mod). If you have a 3D printer and some basic workshop equipment, you can purchase the files and make a kit yourself.
- This limited run will be prepared in one batch and then sent out, so there will be a short delay while final assembly and packaging is completed.
- For logistical reasons, the initial limited run of the Lock-Mod X kits may be sent out in advance of the assembly manual being finalised. To reiterate, the Lock-Mod X should only be installed with the assembly manual. In this case the Lock-Mod X package should be stored until the assembly manual is released, with updates given to buyers via their provided email.
